EXTERNAL WEATHER
LOUVRES

A basic weather louvre is usually mounted in the vertical and has a row of horizontal blades shaped and positioned so as to minimise the ingress of water. Ideal for use on the
external walls of a building at air intakes or discharges. The free area of a conventional louvre is about 50%. However, the blade pitch can be opened up to give up to 65% free
area but the weather keeping properties decrease
considerably and this would only be recommended where the louvre is protected from driving rain by an adjacent structure.

Louvres can be square or rectangular, triangular, circular, in fact, almost any shape. They can have doors in them, be made demountable for service access or built up into
penthouse units on screens.

There are several less conventional louvres which are designed to:
a) be mounted in a roof pitch (angled louvre).
50mm & 70mm pitch
b) to minimise sand intake (sand trap louvre).
c) to be used in more exposed locations
(double bank chevron louvre).
d) reduce contamination between intake and discharge where one louvre is required to handle both supply and extract air (split louvre). 50mm & 70mm pitch

SIZES
38mm pitch.
Any nominal length or height up to 1500mm provided the other dimension does not exceed 1200mm.

50mm pitch.
Any nominal length or height in one piece, provided the face area does not exceed 4 sq metres. However, any nominal length or height can be made up from sections bolted together and, where necessary,
supported on a metal framework. The maximum
diameter for a circular louvre is 2000mm in one
section. A larger diameter can be manufactured in
multiple sections and bolted together.

75mm pitch.

100mm pitch.
Any nominal length or height in one piece provided the face area does not exceed 4 sq metres. However, any nominal length or height can be made up from sections bolted together and, where necessary,
supported on a metal framework. The maximum
diameter for a circular louvre is 2000mm in one
section. A larger diameter can be manufactured in

SANDTRAP
Any nominal length or height in one piece provided the face area does not exceed 4 sq metres. Larger sizes can be made up but they become very heavy to handle. Please contact the factory for details.

ANGLED
Any nominal length or height in one piece provided the face area does not exceed 4 sq metres. Larger sizes can be made up but they become very heavy to handle. Please contact Head Office for details.

CONSTRUCTION
Manufactured from aluminium extrusions with mitred corners The 38mm pitch louvres have cleated corners. All others have welded corners.
The bird mesh is manufactured from steel wire with welded joints and 25mm cells.

Finishes
Louvres are mill finish aluminium. The bird mesh is galvanised after manufacture.

FIXINGS
Surface mounted louvres are fixed through the face flange. Screw holes are not provided as the centres required vary considerably. Fixing type 0F2. Recessed louvres are fixed through the stack. Screw holes are not provided. Fixing Type 0F2.

PACKAGING
Louvres are packed in polythene and then
sandwiched between two pieces of hard board and banded with protective cardboard corners and sides.

EXTERNAL WEATHER LOUVRES
PERFORMANCE DATA 38mm PITCH
• We would recommend that, on air intake, the duct velocity does not exceed 1.5m/s (3.0m/s core velocity) at the louvre in order to minimise the ingress of water. This can be increased to 2.0m/s (4.0m/s core velocity) on extract applications provided the noise and pressure drop criteria are met. Example. to select a louvre for air intake handling 0.3m3/s, place a rule on this point on the volume line and ensure that it crosses the duct velocity line @ 1.5m/s. Note where the rule the pivot line and then rotate the rule about this point to obtain a suitable combination of length and height. In this case a 450mm x 450mm. Read off the pressure drop and N.R., adding 10% to the pressure drop if birdmesh is fitted.

To calculate the size of a louvre to handle more than 2.0m3/s divide the volume by a number that gives a volume equal to less than 2m/s and use the Nomogram. It is reasonably safe to read the pressure drop and NR from the nomogram and use it for the larger louvre. Remember to multiply the resulting duct area shown on the pivot line by the same number used to divide the volume. This will give the face area of the required louvre.
